The term "roof eave" means the edge of a roof. Most roofed structures have eaves, regardless of their ages or architectural styles. Usually, eaves extend approximately 6 inches past the exterior walls.

Eaves protect houses from water damage caused by rain and snow. Extended eaves channel precipitation down and away from the foundation of the home. Wide eaves accommodate gutters, which make water removal even more efficient by funneling water through a vertical drain pipe that channels rainfall away from the structure.   In tropical areas, eaves often conceal vents designed to improve air circulation. The vents serve as a natural, inexpensive form of air conditioning in poor or remote areas without electricity.
